United Security Providers becomes Gold Sponsor of the OWASP Core Rule Set
The open source project OWASP CRS has gained United Security Providers AG as a new gold sponsor. With this financial support, the Swiss provider of IT security solutions is promoting the further development of a comprehensive set of rules for securing web applications.
The Swiss IT security specialist United Security Providers AG (USP) has become a gold sponsor of the OWASP Core Rule Set (CRS). Under the umbrella of the open source foundation OWASP, the CRS project is developing a complex set of rules for use with ModSecurity and compatible web application firewalls (WAF). The CRS sees itself as the first line of defense against cyberattacks on Internet applications. The comprehensive rule set can defend against a wide range of attacks with a minimum of false alarms.
Support from sponsors is very important for the CRS. Christian Folini, co-lead of the project, says: “As an open source project, we work heavily with volunteers. But sponsors like USP allow us to provide free support, organize developer retreats and occasionally entrust a developer with a special task.” For USP, supporting the CRS project underlines its strategic importance in maintaining the quality and security of its own products at the highest level.
An important component of USP’s security solutions
As a software manufacturer and specialist for application and network security products, United Security Providers has been using the Core Rule Set for a long time: it is an important component of the company’s commercial web access management solution USP Secure Entry Server®. “With their enhancements and bug fixes, our developers contribute to the further development of the project and thus give something back to the community,” emphasizes Christoph Koch, CEO at USP. “An even closer exchange between our software developers and the CRS project team is equally beneficial for both sides. The CRS benefits from the experience of our developers in customer contact and we can pass on the power of the open source community to our customers. In this way, we complement each other.”
The CRS is now used by numerous companies and internet service providers worldwide. The project’s core team is basically international, with members in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary and Uruguay, for example. However, Switzerland is particularly well represented with several developers and Christian Folini as one of two co-leads. In this country, the CRS rules are used by numerous banks, Swiss Post, SBB and several cantons.
